DT
Intent
Our aim in Design and Technology is to prepare children to deal with the rapidly changing world. We want our children to ‘see, think and operate like engineers, architects, designers, technicians and makers.’ To have opportunities to respond to a variety of products and designers and learn from their work. We develop their understanding of design criteria looking critically at what makes an item fit for purpose. We build the children’s technical vocabulary, knowledge and skills through the school. They are given opportunities to combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues. We look at designers and makers teaching them to reflect on and evaluate past and present technology. We use skills from other subject areas in projects and develop their knowledge of how skills are used across learning. Children learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
Implementation
Our Design and Technology curriculum is informed by the National Curriculum programme of study. Pupils are taught substantive and disciplinary knowledge in our delivery of the two strands: Designing and Making and Cooking and Nutrition. Pupils will use knowledge and skills taught to design, make and evaluate products connected with class topics which link learning to other learning. Design and technology lessons are taught as a block so pupils can immerse themselves in the role of designer and maker, practising and applying in quick succession. As we frequently have mixed year group classes we have a two year cycle of planning which ensures coverage and progression.
