Preston Candover CE Primary School

Governors

Preston Candover (Church of England) Primary School is governed by a board of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers whose main roles are to plan the strategic direction of the school and to monitor and evaluate the school’s progress.  The governing body aims to achieve this by working closely with the Headteacher and school leadership team offering both support and challenge.

It is also the responsibility of the board to help and support the school in delivering the best possible education to all its learners so monitoring outcomes is a key area of our work.  Specific duties also include agreeing staffing levels, appointing the Head teacher, setting and agreeing the school budget, ensuring a broad and balanced curriculum is delivered and monitoring child protection, health, safety and the management of the premises.

We monitor and evaluate progress towards the school’s priorities by referencing the school’s improvement Plan, and by seeking evidence of continued success and improvement from the Headteacher.  Governors are accountable to all stakeholders (eg parents, carers, staff, local community and local authority) for the school’s overall performance and for the decisions made by the governing body.

We are not involved in the day to day running of the school as this is the responsibility of the Headteacher.  Our role is to provide strategic leadership and ensure accountability in school.

The Governors are proud of the school and continually strive to maintain the overall excellence as well as continually considering ways in which the school can be made even better through the annual cycle of self evaluation and improvement.

The Governors welcome any comments from parents, carers or members of the wider community and may be contacted via the school office.  In the case of a formal complaint, please follow the correct procedure as set out in school complaints policy which may be found on the school website.

Governing Body Membership

Details of the current governors of Preston Candover CE Primary School are shown below.

Membership includes elected representatives of the parent body and school staff, appointees of the Diocese of Winchester and Local Authority and co-opted governors drawn from the local community who have the relevant skills to help the board fulfil its statutory duties. The governing body is constituted as follows:

1 local authority, 1 staff, 2 parents, 3 foundation governors, Headteacher, up to four co-opted governors as the governing gody considers necessary.  Each governor, apart from ex-officio, is appointed for a period of four years.

The governors feel that the board is no bigger than necessary, but large enough to secure the range of skills they need to work effectively.

The full governing body meets four times a year but the majority of the work is carried out at sub-committee level with  meetings as well as formal monitoring visits, attendance at school functions and spending time with the children as volunteer helpers which might include listening to readers, working with small groups on mathematics or attendance at school trips.
