Sporting Activities

Please find listed below details of the various sporting activities in school our pupils participate in.

Academic Year 2019-2020

Cross Country

Following the cross country event our school took part in February one of our Year 5 girls qualified for the Hampshire Cross Country Championships which took place on Tuesday 10th March at Down Grange in Basingstoke. There were approx 100 girls from year 5/6 running from schools across East Hampshire and she came 36th. We are very proud of her and she really enjoyed taking part despite the rain, mud and wind! She even beat the girl who pipped her into 2nd place at Perins a couple of weeks ago, she was really pleased about that! We are already looking forward to taking part in this event next year.

Sports Relief

As part of the nationwide Sport Relief effort this year the BBC Philharmonic orchestra will play Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony live at MediaCityUK in Manchester on Friday 13th March. Hundreds of people nationally will be challenging themselves to run 5K and "beat" the music, which lasts between 30 and 35 minutes.

On Wednesday 11th March the whole school joined together to take part in our own “Beat Beethoven” challenge in aid of Sport Relief.  Each class took part in a running relay  to see how many laps of our Golden Mile track they could do for the length of Beethoven’s Fifth symphony.  We also counted the laps we did towards our whole school Travel to Tokyo challenge and within the session as a school managed to travel 312 miles closer to our final destination of Tokyo.

Perins Football Rally

On Tuesday 3rd March 8 boys and 1 girl from Years 5 and 6 who take part in our after school football club put their skills into practice at the annual 7AS football rally at Perins. The team played in 3 games against other schools from our cluster.

Our sport leaders did a fantastic job of organising the team, making sure everyone got to play an equal amount of time and those who wanted to play in goal got an opportunity to do so. For some children this was their first opportunity to represent our school in an event and they all got to enjoy a fantastic afternoon of football in the wonderful Spring sunshine.

On Tuesday 25th February the whole school joined together to take part in our traditional pancake races. Our sports leaders did an excellent job helping to organise the teams, encouraging everyone and making sure everyone had great fun. Points were awarded for each team in each class and the scores were very close- with the overall winners being the blue team and reds following a close second just one point behind! Following the event a girl in Wrens commented “I can’t wait to do that again next year as it was so much fun!”

Since our return to school in September each class have been making use of our fantastic new Golden Mile track. As a school we are joining together in a whole school challenge to see if we can run the distance to the Olympic destination Tokyo by the end of the summer term. So far we are on the way and have clocked up a total of 1369 miles together. We have currently reached Rivne Oblast in Ukraine and have 4612 miles left to run!

On Thursday 28th November all of the classes from Owls to Kingfishers took part in interhouse basketball games within their PE sessions. The children were spilt into their house teams and took part in mini basketball games, putting into practice the skills they had been focussing on during their curriculum PE sessions. Children in Owls and Robins played half court games and used basketball skills (dribbling and passing) to score points by a player receiving the ball cleanly over their end-line. Kingfishers played full court games scoring baskets in the netball posts. Our 4 sport leaders were involved in umpiring the games and Oscar said “I really enjoyed helping umpire the basketball games. It was a really good experience and I find basketball such a fun game to play as when you start playing you never want to stop.” After a fun packed day of competition the final scores were added up and the overall winners were the Yellow team with 40 points, with the Blues just 2 points behind with 38 points.

On Monday 18th November we took a team of 9 players to Four Marks to play a friendly High 5 netball match. They really enjoyed their first opportunity to play as a team and represent the school, putting into practice the skills they had been learning in the after school netball club.

We played 4 games of 7 minutes so the girls got the opportunity to rotate around most of the different High 5 positions before the light faded!

The girls showed good team work and 2 great goals were scored by Millie and Ally.

After the match each team decided their players of the match for the opposite team and enjoyed a warming hot chocolate before heading home. We are looking forward to arranging some more friendly matches for netball club in the Spring term.

Academic Year 2018-2019

Interhouse Rounders

On Monday 8th July all of the classes from Puffins to Kingfishers took part in interhouse rounder games within their PE sessions.

The children were spilt into their house teams and took part in mini rounders games, putting into practice the skills they had been focussing on during their curriculum PE sessions.

The sessions also included a running relay activity where the children worked together to earn additional house points for their teams.

Our sports leaders did a really fantastic job helping to organise and umpire the games as well as keep the scores. This time the overall winners were the blue team with the yellow team coming a close second.

All the children really enjoyed taking part in a fun packed day of competition which was a lovely way to finish a great year of PE working with our sports specialist from Perins.

Area Sports

On Monday 17th June 63 children in KS2 from Year 3 to 6 came along to represent our school at our annual 7AS Area Sports event. The children all had a lovely evening taking part in a variety of track and field events that they have been practicing during their curriculum PE sessions in school. Lots of children were awarded first, second or third places in their event- one of the highlights being the Year 3 girls relay team who won their event. It was very impressive to see the fantastic display of perseverance, resilience and sportsmanship demonstrated by all the children during the evening- cheering each other on as well as doing the best they could in their own events. It was a great, fun way to end a fantastic year of our continued involvement with the 7AS. Well done to everyone who took part.

Mia sums up the event by saying “it was the last chance for me to represent my school in a sports event and it was great. It was quite competitive but everyone did their best and it didn’t matter where you came or if you were last in the running as everyone was cheering for each other and encouraging not just the people there from our school but people from other schools too. I really enjoyed it.”

Sports day

On Tuesday 4th June the whole school joined together for our annual sports day. During the morning the children took part in a range of different activity stations such as javelin, skipping, shot putt, netball and hoopla, collecting points for their house point team. The children all challenged themselves to take part in each activity station and do the best they could. There was a real family feel to the day with a picnic on the school field and the PCSA serving a range of homebaked goodies. The children then took part in competitive races to add to their points from the morning. Our pre- school children joined us for some of the races too which they all had great fun doing.

After a lovely day of great sportsmanship the yellow team was awarded the house point cup for collecting the most team points throughout the day.

This lovely message from Lily May in Year 6 sums up what a lovely day we all had.

“I have been to quite a few Sports Days in my other schools and this was the best one ever! I really enjoyed it because in the morning I got to do lots of my favourite activities like javelin and it was really lovely that I could go around and do the activities with my friends. The races in the afternoon were really good too as the whole school worked as a team to collect points. The Year 6 relay was a really special way for us to work together for our last Sports Day too.”

Athletics

On Tuesday 21st May we took all of the Year 4 children to an athletics development day at Perins. The children were put into mixed school groups for this and moved around a circuit of stations, each specifically focussing on an athletic discipline. By the end of the afternoon the children received specific coaching in throwing events -/discus/javelin/shot, as well as the long jump and sprinting.  They then took part in a short tournament with the emphasis being on learning something new and having fun. Upon their return to school one girl who had not tried netball before came to ask if netball club would be on in the autumn term as she would like to now join it which was lovely to hear.

Cricket

On Wednesday 1st May Puffins and Owls enjoyed an afternoon of cricket taster sessions run by All Stars Cricket. The children were introduced to the key skills involved in cricket though playing fun team relay games focussing on bowling, batting and fielding. Both classes involved were very enthusiastic about the sessions and several have gone home inspired to join the All Stars Cricket club.

Golden Mile news!

The lovely Spring weather has meant that we were able to restart the Golden Mile from the beginning of March.

Bikeabilty- written byYear 6 pupils

On Monday 21st January we started our bike ability training which helps us in our later life by helping us learn the highway code and to be more aware and safe on the roads. We have learnt skills like how to check that your bike is safe and to make sure you are keeping it in good condition. We both really enjoyed learning the block position and how to manoeuvre around parked cars. Year 6 are really happy that we all got the opportunity and have really enjoyed doing it together.”

On Thursday 13th December the children who take part in the before school dance club run by Premier performed some of the routines they had been working on to the rest of the school. This was an ideal rehearsal for them too as on Saturday 15th December they took part in a dance performance at the Vyne school. The performance was a celebration of dance where all the schools who use Premier for an after school dance club joined together to perform the routines they have been working on in their individual schools to a wide audience of parents. The children all performed amazingly well and their enjoyment was clear to see as they all smiled continually throughout their routines. The showcasing of their dances has already inspired other children to join the club when we return to school after Christmas.

Golden Mile news!

Since the start of the autumn term, as a school we have been taking part in the Golden Mile where we have joined together twice a week to run, jog or walk around the school field for 10 minutes each time. The aim of it is to increase the amount of time children are physically active, inspire and encourage participants with a focus on fun, rewarding personal achievement and encouraging healthy competition.

It has been lovely to see the Year 6 children support and encourage their Year R buddies and the Golden Mile has really promoted our core school values of love, hope and justice.

The children practiced lots of different skills related to the game of cricket – throwing the ball and watching it carefully in order to able  to hit it. They worked in pairs to put the new skills they had learned into practice and all had a great afternoon trying out a new sport. As soon as the children had left the venue we received an email to say what a pleasure the children had been to teach. The children too came back full of enthusiasm after experiencing a new sport.

On Tuesday 9th October a group of Year 5 and 6 children from our school went to the 7AS Basketball tournament at Perins.

The children were spilt into teams of 4 and played against each other as well as against other schools taking part on the day. The children showed excellent teamwork throughout the event and one of our teams came second overall qualifying us for the second round which will be held after half term.

On Tuesday 25th September all of the Year 3’s took part in our annual 7AS World Cup Rugby Day.

The event was a great opportunity for the children to experience a new sport and to promote the game of rugby. They played games that focussed on the skills needed for rugby- passing, dodging and working as a team and then played mini tag rugby games in their teams.

The day was supported by 3 different rugby clubs- Alresford, Basingstoke and Alton and several of the children have now expressed a very keen interest to join a weekend rugby club which showed how much fun they had at this event.

To start off the new academic year all of Key Stage 1 and 2 took part School Fitness Week with Joe Wicks. On Tuesday 12th June we took all of the Year 2 children to a multi sports challenge at Perins. The children were involved in a circuit of 4 different stations, each specifically focussing on a different skill. By the end of the afternoon the children had taken part in javelin, mini relays, agility ladders and their favourite of the afternoon- the obstacle course. They enjoyed this station so much that next year we will be including some of the ideas from the event in our own sports day. All of the children really enjoyed the event, practiced new skills and had an afternoon of sporting fun.

We held our school sports day on Tuesday 5th June. During the morning the children took part in a range of different activity stations such as javelin, skipping, shot putt, netball and hoopla, collecting points for their house point team. The children all challenged themselves to take part in each activity station and do the best they could. There were some very impressive javelin throws from the Year 5 boys in particular.

After a picnic on the school field they then took part in competitive races to add to their points from the morning.

Our pre school children joined us for some of the races too which they all had great fun doing.

After a lovely day of great sportsmanship there was only one point separating the second and third place teams but the red team retained their position from last year as winners of the house cup.

The day was an extremely enjoyable, fun way to start the summer term with our PE specialists from Perins really entering into the spirit of the day by joining in with the final Year 6 relay race!

On Tuesday 22nd May we took all of the Year 3 girls to a netball development day at Perins.

During the first part of the event the girls received coaching in the skills of passing, shooting and marking. They were then spilt into mixed teams of 5 where they put into practice the skills they had been working on in mini High 5 games. The girls rotated around the different positions and got the opportunity to play in each High 5 position.

The girls really enjoyed an afternoon focussing on teamwork in the spirit of friendly competition.

On Tuesday 8th May we took all of the Year 4 children to an athletics development day at Perins. All of the children really enjoyed the event on a lovely warm summer afternoon.

On Tuesday 24th April we took a team to the Perins Tag Rugby festival.

The children played a Round Robin of games playing each other school team twice during the afternoon.

The event was a great opportunity to put into practice the skills they had been developing in their curriculum PE sessions during the Spring term.

An impressive number of tries were scored during the games and the children had a really enjoyable afternoon with the focus on promoting positive play and player development through mini competitive games.

On Tuesday 27th March we took 2 teams to the annual 7AS football rally.

Team B came third in their pool but the decision for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in Team A’s pool had to come down to penalties after each of the 4 games played on that pitch ended in a 0-0 draw! Never in the history of the event have places for all 3 pool positions had to be decided by penalties!

Our penalty shoot out team did so well that instead of it being the best of 3 chances through penalties, a nail biting 15 penalties had to be taken!!

Team A then came 3rd in their pool which meant that the final match for third place was a Preston A verses Preston B match! Preston B won the third place due to an impressive goal from Tom!

It was an amazingly exciting and tense afternoon of football that we were very fortunate to have been able to take 20 fantastic footballers to.

As we were awarded the School Games Gold Mark again this year we were invited to bring some children to a very exciting celebratory event at the Marwell Activity Centre on Wednesday 21st March along with other Hampshire schools that had also achieved the Gold award.

On Wednesday 21st March the whole school joined together to run a mile around the school field to raise money for Sport Relief. There was a great sense of enjoyment and teamwork with the older children running with the younger ones and everyone encouraging each other to run, jog or walk around the field.

This event also launched the Golden Mile for us where as a school we are joining together twice a week to run, jog or walk around the school field for 10 minutes each time. The aim of it is to increase the amount of time children are physically active, inspire and encourage participants with a focus on fun, rewarding personal achievement and encouraging healthy competition. It will be personal to each child but each lap will count towards a mile and certificates will be awarded when children reach certain milestones- a bronze for 10 miles, silver for 25 miles etc.  Throughout the term we are going to see as a school how many miles we can clock up!

On Tuesday 20th March 6 girls in Year 5 and 6 represented our school at the annual netball rally at Perins. There were 7 teams in total and we all played against each other in 7 minute High 5 games. Throughout the rally there were some excellent passes, fantastic interceptions and brilliant sportsmanship. The teams were challenged during the games by playing half each game using the higher posts that are used for 7’s netball to give them an idea what to expect when they move onto Perins.

The games were referred by Perins Year 10 sports leaders who offered coaching points as well as keeping the games flowing.

In our games we lost 2, drew 2 and won 2. The girls all had a great time, made new friends that they might meet again when they move onto secondary school and represented our school wonderfully.

On Tuesday 13th March we held a mini interhouse rugby tournament for all of the children in Years 1 to 6 run by our sports specialist teacher Mr Ledsham assisted by Mr Gillespie.

In the morning Puffins and Owls joined together with each of the 4 house point teams playing against each other. Our 3 sports leaders helped to organise and referee the games.

On Tuesday 27th February 8 Year 2 children went to the 7AS indoor football festival at Perins. The children were spilt into mixed teams of 4- the Panthers and Piranhas. During the event they were taught the key skills of passing, shooting and dribbling by the Year 8 coaches at Perins before putting these into practice in mini competitive games. The Piranha team came second overall- well done Piranhas! The children all really enjoyed the event, displayed great team work and are looking forward to putting the skills they have been taught into practice at playtimes.

We came second with the end result coming down to goal difference with just one point between our team- the Preston Piranahs and the winning team!

On 17th October, seven of our girls proudly represented the school at a hockey festival held at Perins School.  They showed real determination and strong teamwork throughout the competition and came joint third in the final rankings.  for some of them it was their first real hockey match experience and the the Perins staff complimented them on the standard of play and sportsmanship, saying it was far higher than they would have expected from beginners!  The were receptive to comments made by the coaches and endeavoured to put into practise the strategies discussed.

Skipping workshops and Year 3 rugby (September 2017)

2016-2017

On Monday 26th June a total of 52 children came along to Perins to represent our school at the annual Area Sports event.  The children (and staff!) all had a fantastic eveing.  Many of our children ended up on the podium having come 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their event.  Thank you to everyone who took part and all the parents for coming along to support us.  Thank you especially to those children who at the last minute were drafted in so we could enter some races that some children were unable to do.  Monty L-W, Jack B, Lewis B and George L-H did especially well running additional legs of their relays!  In the end, we came second in the small schools competition which was a fantastic achievement.

As we were awarded the School Games Gold Mark this academic year we were invited to bring 4 children to a very exciting award ceremony at the Ageas Bowl on Friday 17th March along with other Hampshire and Isle of Wight schools that had also achieved the Gold award.

4 children from Year 4 were chosen as representatives for this for the commitment they have shown as part of the school council. They had to prepare some questions in advance to ask the athletes they would meet on the day.

The day involved a tour of the Ageas Bowl and all the children engaged in playing a game of netball. They got to meet 3 athletes - Kelly Hull (netball player) Charlotte Dean (cricketer) and Samuel Ward (hockey) and posed the questions they had prepared. They also designed their own t shirt with the “Energise Me” logo on it.

The children all said that it was a real honour to be able to celebrate their schools achievement and be a part of this exciting event.

During their lunch break they got to watch the England vs Australia netball game and see the skills they have been learning in practice. In the afternoon they then were involved in playing games against each other and had the opportunity to put all they had learned throughout the morning into practice. The children all really enjoyed the event and had a great time joining with children from other schools in the spirit of friendly competition.

The 8 girls who represented our school at the Perins indoor hockey festival the week before half term played so well that they qualified for the next stage which was the East Hants hockey festival. This was a very exciting achievement as it is the first time we have gone through to a second stage event! On Tuesday 1st November these 8 girls went to Amery Hill to play against other schools from all over East Hampshire. They played really well as a team and although they didn’t get to the final stage they were commended for their sportsmanship, kindness and consideration towards others. They then all took part in activities putting these skills together and all thoroughly enjoyed the sessions.

On 4th October, 10 Year 5 and 6 children represented our school and took part in a fun afternoon of Basketball at Perins. They played mini games against 3 other schools in our pyramid and scored a very respectable 10 baskets.  The event was widely supported by parents who helped transport the children to the event and stayed to encourage and cheer on the team.
